Principal Engineer - Cybersecurity R&D

About the role

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead cybersecurity research and development for its networking portfolio. The role is hybrid, requiring on‑site presence in the San Juan office two days per week.

Key responsibilities

• Support security certifications such as NIST FIPS 140, Common Criteria and EU Cybersecurity Resilience Act.
• Drive development of product security capabilities, including threat modelling, static and dynamic code analysis, penetration testing, hardware assessments and AI‑enhanced vulnerability management.
• Identify and evaluate emerging cybersecurity technologies, shape the roadmap and lead hands‑on execution.
• Influence senior stakeholders across engineering, product and customer teams.
• Mentor less‑experienced staff and champion best practices in secure development.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Cybersecurity or related field.
• Typically 10+ years of relevant experience.
• Deep knowledge of cybersecurity concepts and ability to adapt to rapidly evolving threats.

Required skills

• Strong networking knowledge and security protocols (TLS, SSH, IPsec).
• Cryptography expertise as applied to networking devices.
• Programming in C (preferred), Python; Rust is a plus.
• Experience driving product security certifications (FIPS 140, Common Criteria, EU CRA).
• Hands‑on use of AI for vulnerability discovery and management, with awareness of AI governance.
