Senior Engineer – Substation Grounding Systems Design

About the role

LUMA Energy is seeking a Senior Engineer to lead substation grounding design activities, provide advanced technical guidance, and ensure safe, reliable, and efficient engineering practices across the organization.

Key responsibilities

• Lead high‑impact studies, research initiatives and strategic analyses to identify opportunities and develop proposals.
• Evaluate studies, reports, contracts and legislation, delivering recommendations that support corporate decision‑making.
• Develop and monitor corporate procedures, policies, and engineering standards, creating performance metrics and control systems.
• Coordinate cross‑functional meetings, committees and technical work teams to resolve complex engineering challenges.
• Coach and develop mid‑level and junior engineers, fostering professional growth and engineering depth.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (ABET‑accredited); Master’s preferred.
• Minimum 8 years progressive engineering experience, including 4 years in the utility electrical industry.
• Professional Engineering License issued by the Puerto Rico Examining Board.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel up to 40 % of the time.

Required skills

• Advanced grounding system modeling and electrical analysis using CDEGS and ETAP.
• Fault‑current analysis, step‑and‑touch voltage assessment, and soil resistivity evaluation per IEEE standards.
• Strong analytical skills for reviewing complex engineering models and providing technical decision‑support.
• Bilingual communication (English and Spanish) for technical reports and stakeholder interaction.
