Mechanical Engineer – Enclosure Design

About the role

iTerra is developing passive, edge‑native RF and electro‑optical sensors for low‑altitude airspace. The Mechanical Engineer will own the physical product – the enclosure, radome, mounts, thermal path and cable routing – and ensure it can survive harsh field conditions while meeting strict ITAR and TAA requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Design and iterate sealed electronic enclosures in SolidWorks, including top‑down assemblies, sheet‑metal, machined 6061‑T6 parts and printed polymers.
• Perform hand calculations and ANSYS simulations for steady‑state and transient thermal performance, structural load, shock and vibration.
• Develop IP65/IP67 waterproofing solutions, MIL‑STD‑810 test plans and execute environmental testing.
• Select and qualify radome materials for RF transparency, dielectric loss and UV/impact resistance.
• Manage 3D‑printing workflows from prototype (ASA) to production parts (PPS‑CF), defining orientation, tolerances and post‑processing.
• Create mounting interfaces for tripod, mast, vehicle roof and portable cases, ensuring rapid field deployment.
• Route RF cables, choose connectors (SMA, TNC, N‑type) and design strain‑relief harnesses for field serviceability.
• Maintain full documentation: 2D GD&T drawings, BOMs, cost estimates and revision control.

Required profile

• B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with 3–6 years of product design experience, preferably in ruggedized electronics, aerospace, defense or marine.
• Hands‑on experience designing and building sealed enclosures that operate outdoors.
• Proven ability to conduct thermal and structural analysis using hand methods and FEA tools.
• Experience with IP‑rating design, MIL‑STD‑810 testing and TAA/ITAR‑compliant supply chains.
• US person status under ITAR and willingness to work onsite in Hatillo, Puerto Rico and in the field.

• ANSYS or equivalent FEA/thermal simulation software.
• Professional‑grade 3D printing (ASA, PPS‑CF, carbon‑fiber composites).
• IP65/IP67 enclosure design and MIL‑STD‑810 environmental testing.
• Aluminum sheet‑metal fabrication, machining, gaskets, seals and corrosion‑control coatings.
• RF‑aware design for radome transparency and cable routing.
• Documentation discipline: detailed drawings, BOMs, revision control, install guides.
