Port Operations Director

About the role

The Port Operations Director provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all San Juan port and terminal activities, including marine stevedoring, yard operations, security, engineering support, and vessel scheduling. The role ensures safe, efficient, and cost‑effective cargo movement while driving operational excellence and regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily terminal operations such as stevedoring, yard work, security, vessel scheduling, and engineering support.
• Develop and enforce operating standards, procedures, and performance goals for terminal and vessel activities.
• Maintain compliance with OSHA, PROSHA, EPA, USCG, DOT, ISO and other regulatory requirements.
• Manage a $30 million+ annual operating budget, monitor expenses, forecast, and report variances.
• Lead a team of three managers, eleven supervisors, and over 200 union employees, handling hiring, training, performance management, and labor relations.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in marine engineering, business, transportation or related field, or equivalent experience.
• 5‑10 years of relevant operations experience with 3‑5 years in a supervisory or management role.
• Proven ability to lead large, unionized workforces, manage multimillion‑dollar budgets, and ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
