About the role
The Paralegal Specialist provides complex legal support for the U.S. Border Patrol’s enforcement mission. Responsibilities include reviewing, analyzing, managing, and adjudicating civil enforcement matters and assisting Asset Forfeiture Officers with policy development and problem resolution of national significance.
Key responsibilities
- Review and adjudicate seizures, penalties, prior disclosures, immigration carrier fines, and claims for liquidated damages within the Asset Forfeiture Officer’s authority.
- Serve as a subject‑matter expert for senior management and may instruct at the Basic Paralegal Certification Course.
- Ensure all due‑process requirements are met and that evidence supports each violation.
- Evaluate case facts against the Seized Asset Management Enforcement Procedures Handbook, considering mitigating and aggravating factors to recommend forfeiture actions.
- Utilize automated case‑management systems to track progress and improve efficiency.
Required profile
- U.S. citizenship with a three‑year residency requirement in the United States or its protectorates.
- One year of specialized experience at the GS‑11 level performing legal determinations, evidence evaluation, and case‑management using automated systems.
- Ability to pass a comprehensive background investigation and meet Selective Service registration (for males born after 12/31/1959).
- Adherence to DHS ethics standards, drug‑free workplace policies, and E‑Verify eligibility verification.
